What bacteriostatic water is
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water that contains a small amount of benzyl alcohol, typically 0.9%. The benzyl alcohol is a bacteriostatic agent, meaning it inhibits the growth of bacteria.
Why the benzyl alcohol matters
Plain sterile water has no preservative, so once a vial is opened it offers no protection against microbial growth. The benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic water is what allows a reconstituted vial to be stored and accessed multiple times over a period of days.
How it compares to other solvents
Sterile and distilled water can dissolve a peptide but lack any preservative. Acetic-acid-based solvents are sometimes used for peptides that are difficult to dissolve. For most research peptides, bacteriostatic water is the standard choice.
