Peptides for Skin Research: A Canadian Guide

Copper peptides

GHK-Cu is the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine complexed with copper. First isolated from human plasma, it has been studied extensively for its role in collagen and glycosaminoglycan synthesis, wound remodeling, and antioxidant activity. Research suggests it acts partly as a signaling molecule that modulates the expression of genes tied to tissue regeneration, which is one reason it also appears in the recovery blends described below.

AHK-Cu is a related copper tripeptide - alanyl-histidyl-lysine bound to copper - that has drawn interest specifically in hair-follicle research. Preclinical work has examined its effect on dermal papilla cells and on angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels that support follicle activity, making it a frequent subject in studies of hair growth and scalp biology.

Cosmetic and blended peptides

SNAP-8, also called acetyl octapeptide-3, is a cosmetic peptide developed as an elongated relative of the well-known hexapeptide argireline. It has been investigated for its ability to interfere with the SNARE complex that drives neurotransmitter release at the neuromuscular junction, which in turn influences the muscle contractions associated with expression lines. GLOW is a combination blend that pairs the copper peptide GHK-Cu with the repair peptides BPC-157 and TB-500. It is studied where researchers want to observe copper-driven matrix effects alongside broader tissue-repair signaling in a single preparation. KLOW builds on the same idea and adds KPV, an anti-inflammatory tripeptide, giving it a fourth component aimed at inflammatory-pathway research. Both blends are examined for combined skin and repair endpoints rather than one isolated mechanism.

Antioxidant and pigmentation research

Glutathione is a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine and is one of the principal intracellular antioxidants found in living cells. In skin research it is studied both for its role in neutralizing reactive oxygen species and for its influence on melanin synthesis, where it can shift pigment production toward the lighter eumelanin by interacting with the tyrosinase pathway. Its stability is sensitive to oxidation, so handling and storage are important variables in any experiment.

Melanotan-1, also known as afamelanotide, takes the opposite approach to pigment. It is a synthetic analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone that acts as an agonist at the melanocortin-1 receptor, and research has examined how this activation drives melanogenesis - the production of melanin - and the potential photoprotective effects that follow. It sits within the melanocortin family, distinct from the antioxidant and copper compounds above.

Handling and storage

These compounds are supplied as lyophilized powders or, in the case of the blends, as co-lyophilized vials, and they are reconstituted with bacteriostatic water for laboratory measurement.
